Award of the documentary "Xerolithia" at the International Epidaurus Film Festival
A significant honour for the LIFE TERRACESCAPE project is the award the documentary "Xerolithia", directed by Stelios Charalambopoulos, with the Best Documentary Award (Odysseus Awards) at the 1st Epidaurus International Film Festival. A production of the University of the Aegean (Scientific Manager: Theodora Petanidou).
This international recognition is the culmination of an effort that has been taking place for the last 5 years in Andros Island, specifically with the implementation of the LIFE TERRACESCAPE project, for the functional restoration of the terraces through their re-cultivation, with the establishment of the first Land Stewardship Organization "Aegean Farmers".
The documentary outlines the timeless relationship of the islanders with the Aegean landscape, focusing on the construction and cultivation of terraces completely intertwined with island life. The past, present and future of terraced cultivation are presented as their cultural and ecological value, with particular emphasis on their environmental importance, through their perennial function as Green Infrastructures, which now are an insurmountable tool for curbing the effects of climate change changes that threaten the Aegean.
Through the documentary, experiences of the daily rural life of the inhabitants of Andros are captured, the traditional agricultural practices that have been applied throughout time are shown, and the art of dry stone carving is highlighted, which in 2018 was included by UNESCO in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Congratulations to all the contributors of the documentary for this great distinction.
