University of the Aegean (Coordinating Beneficiary)

Founded in 1984, the University of the Aegean is one of the most newly-founded Universities in Greece. It is dispersed over six Aegean islands covering all Regions of the Aegean Sea (Lesvos – where its Headquarters and Administration, Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Syros, and Lemnos). It is ranked as one of the biggest universities in the country comprising 18 Departments. The University’s connection with other Greek and foreign Universities, Research Institutions, and Businesses, its fully equipped laboratories and the top quality of its scientific and research staff have resulted in outstanding results demonstrated in different fields and levels.Three research laboratories are involved in the University's team: (1) the Laboratory of Biogeography and Ecology at the Department of Geography, with 30 years of experience in landscape research and conservation, among others, in the terraced landscapes of the Aegean with important and pioneering publications and books, as a result of several research projects for the terraces of the Aegean Archipelago, which have successfully completed, (2) the Regional and Insular Development Laboratory, in the Department of the Environment, focusing on the “Development – Environment – Planning” triptych, aiming at sustainable local and insular development and island management, with emphasis on activities related to the promotion of local primary products and tourist services (3) the Cartography and Geoinformatics Laboratory at the Department of Geography, with state-of-the-art know-how in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Mapping.
